From the Front Lines to the Rim: The Story of C.L. Kan
C.L. Kan is a dark fantasy author and former U.S. Army Airborne Infantryman whose debut novel, The Corruption Within, draws on real military deployment and rural Midwest roots rather than research alone. (Note: this page is about C.L. Kan, author of the 2025 grimdark novel The Corruption Within — not the unrelated 2021 point-and-click video game or the unrelated thriller novel that share the same title.)
My journey didn’t start with a pen. It started on a pig farm in rural Iowa, continued through fifteen months in Iraq as an Airborne Infantryman, and ran through two decades in the swine industry before I ever sat down to write The Corruption Within.

Military Service and the Weight of Realism
At twenty-one, I enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Infantryman. My fifteen-month deployment to Iraq taught me the heavy weight of responsibility and the raw reality of camaraderie. When you read my dark fantasy novels, you aren’t getting a sanitized version of war the characters I create reflect the resilience and scars of a veteran, bringing a level of gritty realism rarely seen in the genre.
From the Pig Farm to the Page
Life on that small Iowa farm was defined by the relentless discipline of tending livestock before sunrise. This grounded, “bottoms-up” perspective is what differentiates my writing I don’t just write about survival, I lived it. Those early years in the fields shaped the discipline it took to build the expansive world of The Corruption Within.
Credentials: Two Decades, One MBA, and a Lifelong Obsession
After two decades in the swine industry and earning my MBA, I turned my focus back to a lifelong obsession: ancient magic and epic fantasy. But I wanted to subvert the tropes. Instead of “chosen ones” with ancient knowledge, I write about novices struggling with raw magic people who fail, bleed, and learn alongside the reader.
The Origin of 'The Rim'
The vision for the Rim of the World the setting of my debut novel came from a single moment on an Iowa road, where the sky and earth blurred into a gigantic bowl. It took four years of dedicated craft and writing study to bring that vision to life. Today, The Corruption Within stands as the culmination of a life lived in the trenches, the fields, and the shadows of the imagination.
